I admit it: I’m getting a little tired of all the trembling talk about “investment pieces.” While I’m all for a justifiably (perhaps) expensive (definitely) item to have and to hold—and certainly for making smart, timeless purchases of lasting pieces—there’s something refreshing about a good old affordable buy. France’s Bensimon sneakers fit that bill nicely. Explicitly designed as “disposable footwear,” the low-top kicks were picked up by everyone from Princess Diana to Jane Birkin after they were introduced in Europe. A few colors have been available in the U.S., but this season marks the debut of the full 21-shade palette. That means there’s now one to go with just about anything. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them disposable, but at $58 a pair, you can go ahead and invest—i.e., buy two.

Sometimes, more is more. For Fall, jewelry designer Dana Lorenz piled it on for her Fenton line, freighting multi-strand necklaces, chokers, and bracelets with chains, pearls, rhinestones, and—seasonally appropriate, we’re finding—tufts of fur. Rie Rages, Tommy Forgives, And More…

On the heels of one of his most successful trunk shows to date, Brian Reyes is in Los Angeles lingering in the glow of his well-received Fall ‘10 collection. The best news for the label, still looking to translate its critical success into sustained commercial viability? “Women are shopping again,” Reyes says with relief. “They understand the value of each design now, and they’ve come to expect our quality fabrics.” Not to mention the subtly graphic prints that have become a standout and signature of his line. The designer’s elegantly draped tulip cape (Fall’s answer to the ubiquitous structured blazer?) in a jacquard birch print and an updated version of his body-con dresses with peplum detailing have consistently been the most popular with buyers and customers. But Reyes is already looking ahead—and mixing business with a little pleasure. He’s days away from debuting his capsule collection designed exclusively for Saks, but, he says, “I actually spent the day on the beach picking out my fabrics for resort.”

Retailers are always scrambling to find—and buy—the next big thing, but it’s hard to
find a better divining rod than Paris’ Maria Luisa Poumaillou. At her eponymous Parisian stores (and, as of last fall, the Maria Luisa shop in Paris’ revamped Printemps), Poumaillou carries the best and brightest international designers, and has since their Young Turk days. But the editors and designers who gathered last night were celebrating Poumaillou’s own designs for her house collection, begun quietly as a capsule two seasons ago and now launching as a full range. “We wanted to do this collection for a long time, not to compete with the labels we sell, but to offer style for less,” she explained over a glass of prosecco. Separates like loose apron dresses, transparent overskirts, scoop-neck crop tops, and chunky V-neck sweaters shot through with Lurex should integrate seamlessly into her customers’ label-crammed wardrobes. (American shoppers can pick them up at Opening Ceremony in New York and Ron Herman as well as Opening Ceremony in L.A.) But though her designs should grab attention on both sides of the Atlantic, she’s not one for screaming self-promotion. “Red-carpet party dressing is dead,” she pronounced. “I’m so tired of designers telling me I should buy their collections because Rihanna or Lady Gaga wore them.”
